Background[edit source]

Phantom is from a parallel universe. Before he came to the Dark Eras setting, he was forged in Polyhex by some neutrals who had obtained his parts illegally off-world so as to enhance his purpose as a showy illusionist working for a nomadic entertainment company. He toured Cybertron for a while with the entertainment company, playing a main role in the disappearing act of their world famous show.

When the Decepticons started to mobilize militarily, idealists began hosting rallies where they claimed the Autobots would cause the death of the Cybertronian race as a whole. Swayed by their passionate outcries, he consequently joined their forces and took up permanent residence in Polyhex, participating in the boot camps being held there.

By this point in time, all Cybertronians were aware of the fact that Cybertron’s resources were dwindling. The Decepticons, in order to save resources and slow the rate of energon consumption by trimming the population of its weaker portion, held starvation trials. These trials involved the complete shut down of all energon plants and other structures sustaining resources for an allotted period of time. Stockpiling was only allowed for a certain amount of time prior to the trials. Violation of the stockpiling protocols was punishable by death. Furthermore, all Decepticons were required to participate.

During one of these starvation trials as a Decepticon, Phantom met Quantum. Quantum had stumbled accidentally into the Polyhex of Phantom’s universe, and was consequently taken captive by a team of Decepticons looking for stockpiled rations. Quantum, of course, knew nothing, and took a beating for no reason at all. Phantom, having been separated from his own team, happened to be nearby at the time but in hiding, afraid of being discovered while alone and vulnerable. When his captors momentarily stepped away, Quantum spotted Phantom and offered to help him escape being discovered by the other team should he set him free.

Phantom saw an opportunity to escape being taken hostage and beaten to a pulp or killed, so he took Quantum up on his offer. The two consequently escaped to the southern part of Polyhex, where they remained safe until the Autobots suddenly ambushed the city, taking Quantum and many other Decepticons hostage.

Once taken to back Iacon, Quantum was subjected to further questioning and examination by the Autobots. When they discovered that Quantum had a unique ability to quantum jump, they took him to an research facility where some rather naive scientists forced his chest cavity open and proceeded to pierce the chamber inside of him containing the quantum foam. Meanwhile, Phantom had followed Quantum to Iacon, and just as the scientists were piercing Quantum’s foam chamber, he was able to break in and free him. However, it was too late, the quantum foam was leaking everywhere, wreaking havoc.

Within a matter of minutes, the foam had caused the entire structure to be transported dangerously near a dying star. While everyone else perished, Quantum managed to jump himself and Phantom in the nick of time to the present universe.

Upon arriving in Quantum’s universe, Phantom discovered that his body’s mass was behaving in a peculiar way—sometimes, he could inadvertently pass through walls, or move his extremities through solid objects. At first, he couldn’t figure out why his body was solid sometimes and other times not, and for a while, this physical anomaly frustrated him to no end. However, eventually, after discussing the matter with Quantum, he realized that perhaps the only valid theory behind his condition was that him originating from a different universe was causing his existence to fluctuate oddly. Thus, he came to terms with it.

Not long after that, he discovered that if he focused correctly, he could control his unstable density. Eventually, he learned to use it to his advantage to make fast getaways, or secretly eavesdrop in on a conversation.

Unfortunately, his unstable mass still had drawbacks. While he could force a state of nonexistence, this peculiar phenomenon still seemed to occur spontaneously and outside of his control on occasion. Whenever this happened, he would re-awaken later, disoriented and somewhere random, his recent memories gone. This kind of phenomenon would leave Phantom at odds with himself, wondering once again if he actually existed and to what purpose his life served, or if he was just a trace presence, lingering until fate decided he should cease to be.

Skills & Abilities[edit source]

Intangibility - Phantom can phase through almost everything, including energy fields (but not without causing himself significant damage) putting his ability to infiltrate at expert level. His ability to control the density of his particles also allows him to hide himself inside of larger objects, or conceal himself in unusual spaces.

Unencumbered retreat - Phantom doesn’t usually pick fights, because his fighting skills are average at best. However, if he does, ninety percent of the time, he won’t finish what he started because his forte is in making an efficient retreat without sustaining damage. Once he’s decided to leave, there’s no stopping him — his intangibility prevents the enemy from barring his escape, unless of course, he’s been knocked over or hindered by an energy field.

Weaknesses[edit source]

Unstable density - Phantom cannot remain intangible for an infinite amount of time during a single sitting. In fact, the shorter his phase intervals are, the better. Remaining intangible for long periods of time detracts from his ability to control the density of his particles, and as time progresses, the harder it becomes for him to solidify again. A state of nonexistence, either forced, due to maintenance of a loose density for too long, or spontaneous, can also cause amnesia and a highly decreased chance of proper reformation or reformation at all. Unconsciousness or a prolonged period of idling can also cause his density to fluctuate randomly, and even force him into state of complete nonexistence. For this reason, he can be likened to an insomniac who rarely rests or lies down, except for short amounts of time at spontaneous moments when he needs it most.

Negative Healing Factor - Maintaining a solid state while injured can be difficult for Phantom. Staying solidified requires a certain amount of focus, and depending on the severity of his wounds, this can prove to be a feat for him while he is getting repairs.

Decreased Speed - While his density is decreased, so is his speed. This is due to the fact that his engines are not as efficient at propulsion in a state of intangibility.
